Water filter question

When the fiver is not in use should I remove my water filter and open up the low point drains? I know the water becomes stagnant in the lines but does it harm the water filter by leaving it in its container? Should I blow out the water in my lines? The fiver sits 4-6 weeks in between uses. Don't see anything in the manual about this. Thanks everyone. Travel on.

  • Do you sanitize the lines in your house when it has been sitting for a long time? It is a sealed system and I would not do a darn thing unless it sat for a LONG TIME.
  • I was told by some water filter people to remove the filter and put it in the refrigerator in a plastic bag until the next time you need it

My method is that as soon as I return from a trip with the RV, I FILL the FW tank with chlorinated water from a potable source and the chlorinated water stays in the system until the next time I use it. IF that next trip is more than a month or so since the last one, I first drain and re=fill the water system with fresh water. Empty but damp water lines and tank are a really good place to grow bacteria and having chlorinated water in there prevents bacteria growth. My whole house filter stays installed at all times except if I winterize the RV.

X2. I have a well back at the stick and brick so I need to supply my own chlorine, which I do with the bleach.

It's really just a 2-part sanitizing procedure - put the chlorine in when you get home and flush it out before you leave on your next trip. Or if you have city water and it hasn't been too hot out - maybe you are good to go without flushing.

    Happy travels.
  • I don't know if this is true or not, but way back when we bought our first trailer the dealer told us the tanks should never be stored dry. For almost 30 years I have always left at least 5 gallons in all the tanks and the fresh water tank normally doesn't go below a 1/3.

  • Myself I would not go to all that trouble. If you drain everything you will need to go through the sanitize process. In your statement if you go through with it do not forget the hot water heater.
  • I put a cup of bleach in my 60 gal fresh water tank, top it off with water and run the bleach water through the lines. When it's time to travel I flush the system well before I go. Some of the bleach smell lingers for the first tank or two, then all is well.
