Some of the confusion comes from “towing ratings” published on the internet and elsewhere! Those ratings are more or less mythical. Pulling a 5th wheel vs. a trailer are to entirely different things, yet people use the tow ratings as a guide for either, hence the confusion. As already stated, a 5th wheel puts 20 to 25% of the loaded weight of the trailer in the bed of your truck. This far difeferant than the 8 to 10% of a liter trailer. Also, with a trailer, all that weight is on the bumper, which unloads the steer wheels. So this requires you to look at engine, transmission, suspension, tires and wheels, as well as suspension. Also, keep in mind the “dry” weights on either Travel Trailers or 5th wheels are only estimates, they don’t include things like batteries, propane, etc. Only loading your vehicle, and rig as if you are going camping, and then taking that down to your CAT scales will give you accurate figures. So if your close to exceeding any or all capacities, you may be over when all is said and done! Thus, the weight police will advise, “get a one ton dually” and you won’t have a problem.
