I've pulled into camp spots out in the desert where someone before us had just opened their gray valve right there in the camp. It was pretty disgusting because of all of the food particles from their dishes. (Couldn't scrape those plates first?) The area smelled and the camp was covered with flies. It was bad enough to go someplace else.
When I've dumped my gray tank out there, I've used the hose connection on my dump cap and ran my tank flush hose into a hole like Nayther said. It soaked slowly into the hole and there was no harm.
My only one very irresponsible transgression was the one time we got to camp and after setting up camp by myself (wife was coming out the next day) I discovered that our tanks were still full from the last trip. It took me a couple of trips with a tote and I dug a very deep hole far from any camps and dumped the black tank out there. When I was all done, I puked in the hole, filled the dirt back in, and you couldn't really tell anything had happened except for the mound of loose dirt. I consider that to be my one lifetime mulligan, never to be repeated. And trust me, it was its own punishment.
