- donn0128Explorer IIAs long as people think they can tow the weight of the world with a 1500 or 2500 it wont happen.
- fj12ryderExplorer IIIA guy at the last RV park we were at was hauling a new 45' Momentum with a couple quads in it with a 3/4 ton truck. If he can do that where is the need for larger/heavier trucks?
- coolbreeze01ExplorerIt happened a few years ago. The larger TH's are too much for 3/4 tons and most 1 tons.
- naturistNomadAs long as people think accidents only happen to other people, and as long as unscrupulous salesmen continue to say absolutely anything to make a sale, there will be people dragging around way too heavy loads with way to small trucks.
- fly-boyExplorerAs long as the HD trucks keep getting more and more capable the TH's can get heavier and heavier.
- JAC1982ExplorerI dunno, to me, there's just a handful of THs that are too heavy to pull safely with a 1 ton. There's still tons of other very nice models that are doable with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
I do wonder though, other than for the folks who full time, what the need is for a 45' toy hauler? We're looking at 38'ish models and they feel huge to me, and definitely overkill for just vacationing. But, we want a 12'6" separate garage so we pretty much have to go that big. - ramgunnerExplorer

I'm glad that in a free society, we aren't constrained by "needs". What you may see as a "need", another watching you may define as a "want", or even as "unnecessary". I don't think you want anyone else defining your needs. Once you let them, you will find all of your freedom defined by their "feelings", not by what you need or even want.
We were not originally planning to full time, but wanted something big enough for our family with plenty of room, and a garage big enough for the ATV's that we might decide to get in the future. We went with a 43' Grand Design Momentum 385TH, and we have enough truck to safely manage the load.
I've had people ask my why I need such a large truck, because they feel that I don't need something that big. In a free society, their feelings don't define my needs, and I'm happy to explain that.
Some folks like to have extra room, lots of it. Some look at the "zombie apocalypse" aspect of having a trailer equipped with water and waste tanks, a generator, and systems designed to run off of 12VDC for extended use in a disaster. Some just like to have more than everyone else. It's not up to me to define their needs, and it's great that we are all free enough to fulfill our needs. - JAC1982ExplorerI wasn't judging someone for wanting a huge toy hauler. I guess my question was more rhetorical and/or a thought of, when is bigger getting to be too big? Like, a 45' toy hauler is pretty large. Will manufacturers start making even bigger ones since there is definitely a desire for people to continue to want even bigger?
Then again, when I was single, I happily lived in a 340 sq ft apartment and feel like our 1850 sq ft house is huge, so I guess it just depends on the people involved :)
I do feel like that if a natural disaster hits, rendering your home unlivable, pretty sure the trailer isn't going to make it either unless it's parked nowhere near your house or you somehow know the disaster is coming and can get out of dodge. - 2001400exExplorer

When are the TH's gonna be just too much for the everyday HD truck and Med/semi trucks are gonna be needed? Some of these weight's....
Go to the tow vehicles forum. Trucks are keeping up too.
But I do agree, my 08 3/4 ton cannot legally pull any new fifth wheel tow hauler because the payload on my pickup and the pin weight of the fifth wheel. - ramgunnerExplorer

Every year, the capabilities of tow vehicles (at least the DRW/LB trucks with the intent of towing/hauling) are going up. The manufacturers keep leap-frogging each other. When I got our truck, it had the greatest capacity. Now, another make has surpassed it.
As long as that keeps happening, within DOT regulations and other applicable restrictions, I think they (trailers and tow vehicles) will keep matching each other.
