It happened a few years ago. The larger TH's are too much for 3/4 tons and most 1 tons.
Don't say that too loud...some may actually start believing it!! LOL!
The usual comment is my truck pulls it just fine!
Yes, my SRW did pull my trailer just fine, but my DRW pulls is easily and safely within its limits.
Sorry I once was a believer of not needing a DRW, now I will never go back unless I go smaller. - 2001400exExplorerhttp://special-reports.pickuptrucks.com
The 2014 ultimate one ton challenge. There are a few other interesting tests there. I hear they are going to do a 2017 once the Chevy is released. - notevenExplorer IIIWhere would I look for some video and data on braking and handling tests of some different pickup / heavy trailer rigs?

I dunno, to me, there's just a handful of THs that are too heavy to pull safely with a 1 ton. There's still tons of other very nice models that are doable with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
I do wonder though, other than for the folks who full time, what the need is for a 45' toy hauler? We're looking at 38'ish models and they feel huge to me, and definitely overkill for just vacationing. But, we want a 12'6" separate garage so we pretty much have to go that big.
Not sure whether ours will be quite in the 45ft range but we will be fulltiming in one with the 12ft min garage length...well I want 14ft but other half wants some decent living area too so I'm thinking maybe 13ft as a happy medium, so that gets us into the 43-45ft range. I have the truck to handle one so why not have what you want as long as your equip is safe at that length/weight/range. - tinner12002Explorer

- drittalExplorerThey already have exceded safe margins for SRW IMO. Just because the motor pulls it doesn't mean you should.
See 3/4t all the time out here, lights aimed at the clouds towing triple axle TH at 75-80. Half the time the trailer isn't level either.
Had the laugh this summer. Coming back from vacation we passed a someone on the side of the road changing their trailer tire. I thought about seeing if they needed help but they had the new tire on already. 30 min later they pass me blowing black smoke like I was standing still at 65....
100 miles later there were chunks of tire all over the highway and the same truck and trailer on the side of the road. Good thing they were in a hurry to get where they were going. Saved a lot of time and money. - ramgunnerExplorer

I wasn't judging someone for wanting a huge toy hauler. I guess my question was more rhetorical and/or a thought of, when is bigger getting to be too big? Like, a 45' toy hauler is pretty large. Will manufacturers start making even bigger ones since there is definitely a desire for people to continue to want even bigger?
Every year, the capabilities of tow vehicles (at least the DRW/LB trucks with the intent of towing/hauling) are going up. The manufacturers keep leap-frogging each other. When I got our truck, it had the greatest capacity. Now, another make has surpassed it.
As long as that keeps happening, within DOT regulations and other applicable restrictions, I think they (trailers and tow vehicles) will keep matching each other. - 2001400exExplorer

When are the TH's gonna be just too much for the everyday HD truck and Med/semi trucks are gonna be needed? Some of these weight's....
Go to the tow vehicles forum. Trucks are keeping up too.
But I do agree, my 08 3/4 ton cannot legally pull any new fifth wheel tow hauler because the payload on my pickup and the pin weight of the fifth wheel. - JAC1982ExplorerI wasn't judging someone for wanting a huge toy hauler. Then again, when I was single, I happily lived in a 340 sq ft apartment and feel like our 1850 sq ft house is huge, so I guess it just depends on the people involved :)
I do feel like that if a natural disaster hits, rendering your home unlivable, pretty sure the trailer isn't going to make it either unless it's parked nowhere near your house or you somehow know the disaster is coming and can get out of dodge.
