Will I have issues with 1T TV and HT fifth?

My 2014 Ram 3500 Megacab came in yesterday, so now I need to decide on the rig behind it. The Jayco Eagle HT 29.5BHDS fits the bill perfectly for us (length, double queen beds in back) and price is good, but I am concerned about getting the thing to ride level with my truck. I "think" I can only get 15 inch wheels on the Eagle HT...these new 3500's sit up a good bit too.

Do you think I would have "too much" truck for the HT fifth? Pin weight is only maybe 2000lbs (GVWR of 10k). My payload sticker shows 4034 on the door:cool: The combination of not a lot of pin weight to settle the truck down, and the smaller tires is what has me concerned. What do you all think??

Any other models out there that have a double over double back end and an outdoor kitchen? I like the Jayco floorplan because it has both of these and it is not 38ft plus long. I like a lot of 38 plus ft fifths, but would have issues storing one that big.

Also, since it is a Megacab, it has the 6'4" bed..I have the factory prep 5th wheel on the truck, so likely will have to go with picture frame adapter and a sliding hitch (pullrite)...but Pullrite has NO height adjustment available on it from what they tell me.

  • My 3500 is a SRW, but from what I have seen so far, it isnt going to squat much with a 2k pin weight on it.

Good call on backing under it to see what I got. I am not stuck on the HT series...in fact, I would not mind a little more weight and heft (sturdiness??) back there...that just happens to be the floor plan that we like. I do need clarification on the wheel size though...I would feel better with 16 inch wheels for sure (more height, more capacity, etc)...although most of our trips will be shorter 200-400 miles with one big one (1000-2000 miles) per year.
  • Find one on a lot and back under it, best way to be sure if you will have the right amount of clearance.

  • You'll have to excuse Donno. He thinks big. That series is the half ton towable. About 10k GVWR. Nothing wrong with 15" ST tires on a fiver that size. It is what they all have. Of course, your cargo capacity is limited in the HT units.

I think you are right to be concerned about so little trailer on so much truck. It is likely to beat the frame pretty good. But if it is what you want, the various cushioned pin boxes might be useful. Try it first though.

As for bed height, Jayco doesn't include the pinbox elevation dimension in their specs. I wish all the manufacturers would, but most don't. So I would visit a dealer if I could, or call Jayco if necessary, and ask them for that dimension. I would feel better if I put the tape measure on it myself. Then do the math. As you can guess, your dually isn't going to squat much at all.

Usually, new truck + new trailer = correct bed clearance. But there is no substitute for measuring everything.

It must be a pretty rare fiver that still has spring under suspension. That's very old school.

First off there is no way in heck I would buy a new trailer with 15 inch wheels. That would tell me that it has low cpacities, low axle ratings and limited to cheap ST tires. You might want to continue your search for trailers with at least 16 inch wheels. That way you can install quality LT tires when the cheap China bombs blow out.

Hmm...good points. I need to clarify if there r 15 or 16 inch wheels on there

  • Are the axles on the Jayco above the springs or below the springs (preferred)? Having the axles below the springs gives you pretty good height to start with.

There may be adjustment capability on the king pin of the Jayco too.
