WONDERING,or WANDERING?

Good afternoon everyone.
I have been thinking of a trip. Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail.
Start in St. Louis, MO, which is only 35 miles away from where we live, all the way to the Pacific ocean.
Has anyone traveled the trail pulling a fifth wheel?
If so, did you just follow the roadside markers, or did you use a guide book?
Also, how about the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail?
I think that any of these trails would be one heck of an adventure.
Just read a short blog. The folks that wrote it, took the Oregon Trail west, took 3 weeks, and then the Lewis and Clark Trail back to St. Louis, also took 3 weeks. My kind of travel, NO RUSH.
Maybe in a year or two.
But of course gotta due Route 66 from Chicago to the Pacific.
Any thoughts, ideas, etc appreciated.

    I didn't have a guidebook for the Trace, only the brochure from the visitor center and my notes gleaned from the internet. I should have been better prepared with more information about campgrounds and amenities near the route.

    The route is an easy drive and traffic is light, much of it is not spectacular but all is nice. Plan on taking some short hikes to see waterfalls and other things of interest.

    Not a lot of asphalt at the Indian Post Office!!! Trail follows the ridge of the mountain for many miles.

    My great grandparents(Judson's) were members of the Longmire wagon train in 1853.

    We tried to pick up the L and C in Omaha( visitors center there) and follow it to close to Glacier NP. Great trip but not always easy to be sure you were actually on the L and C. One place the asphalt ended with a sign "highway resumes in 30 miles" then it was gravel so we turned and went around that section. Several things similar. But it was still OK to do it's just not one continuous clearly marked highway.

    While camp at a Forest Service campground along Highway 12 in Idaho which parallels the Lewis and Clark trail, we drove up the mountain and traveled a few miles of the trail in the Indian Post Office area.

    The Jefferson Highway, WOW, what a fun drive that would be.
    I will have to research that route..
    Is that along US Hwy. 61, which follow the Mississippi River?

    Hi Lynmor. I am leaning towards the Natchez Trace as our first big adventure.
    my Sweetheart and I have together a little over 2 years. Two seniors who have found a Life Partner to share the adventures. Me being 75, Brenda being 68. We realize that we are so blessed and lucky to have been introduced by a mutual friend. The rest is history.
    We rally want to do these trips. And we will. Starting next year. Redong my house now, so this summer is gone. Then heading to FL for the winter.
    LOVE THE RV LIFESTYLE.

    There is also a movement to mark and recognize the old Jefferson Highway "Pine to Palm," which goes from Winnepeg to New Orleans.

    You probably know that 66 is marked in many places in Missouri.

    I hope that you are able to make your journey, and that you will report back on this forum. We are always interested in a new adventure, since it's all about the journey, not the destination.

    I've done the Natchez Trace, nice drive with just a few bad miles of poor road conditions, but that may be better or worse now. I also did much of L&C, there are many interesting stops. In either case, get a guide book so that you can find things that may be slightly off route.

    I only did a small portion of Route 66, seeing all those failed small businesses was a bit depressing.

I didn't have a guidebook for the Trace, only the brochure from the visitor center and my notes gleaned from the internet. I should have been better prepared with more information about campgrounds and amenities near the route.

The route is an easy drive and traffic is light, much of it is not spectacular but all is nice. Plan on taking some short hikes to see waterfalls and other things of interest.

Great trip but not always easy to be sure you were actually on the L and C. I am leaning towards the Natchez Trace as our first big adventure.
my Sweetheart and I have together a little over 2 years. Two seniors who have found a Life Partner to share the adventures. Me being 75, Brenda being 68. We realize that we are so blessed and lucky to have been introduced by a mutual friend. The rest is history.
We rally want to do these trips. And we will. Starting next year. Redong my house now, so this summer is gone. Then heading to FL for the winter.
