Changing Domicle to Florida

Afternoon all, ok we have been fulltimers for 7 years and have South Dakota as our legal address. Since we have been spending lots of time in Florida and plan to in the future, we are thinking of changing. One big reason is with the new health care act, there are more doctors in network here if we change. If we keep SD everything is out of network. Anyway, does anyone have the current pros/cons of changing our legal address to florida. Thanks for the info.

What else is taxed? Personal property? Pension? 401? Land?
Just wondering, we will be there in a couple of yes.

  • Doesn't sound like you have much choice, but expect higher auto insurance rates.
  • As a Florida native I believe you will find it equitable. As you noted medical providers/facilities are plentiful, sales tax varies by county from 6.5%-7.5% and there is no state income tax. Other govt fees are moderate compared to some and the weather can't be beat. The history, beaches and other natural recreation sites speak for themselves.
  • Hey all, we would base ourselves at a campground down in the keys where we already stay 6-7 months of the year. We just didn't know the difference from South Dakota to Florida. Thanks for the info.
  • "Largest collection of oldest living things"

    Hey! I resemble that remark!

We live in Florida and will be using our son's address. If I recall, you will need some sort of proof that you live at your friend's address to register your vehicle - utility bill, etc. I could be wrong. We aren't expecting a problem because we already live here, he is family and parents moving in with children is a plausible situation.

There is no sales tax on most food items and drugs. If you are fulltimers, you won't be buying much else. Where would you put it? Welcome to our state.
  • Florida native here; grew up in Clay county, currently reside in Santa Rosa (Navarre). Sales tax here is 6.5%, and beaches are beautiful. Being retired military, FL also offers several military facilites, plus no income tax. We're not perfect, but nothing beats 10 months average moderate weather. Depending on county, we are (usually) much lower on gas than the national average.

We have the largest collection of oldest living things on planet earth (especially southern counties) and health care should be a non-issue.

Finally, you're no more than 60 miles from any beach, the gulf coast is beautiful, and there is always something to do or see. I don't see how you can go wrong.
  • We started fulltime RV traveling from FL 13 years ago. Lived there for nearly 20 years. We do not have any physical assets anywhere aside what we carry with us. We maintain FL residency by virtue of a friend who lends us his address and handles our mail. We periodically research other states but have never found a compelling reason to switch elsewhere. We believe that FL presents an equitable deal for the fulltimer.
  • The main issue between SD and FL is on sales tax.

Florida has no state income tax.

for vehicle registration fees. You can call them and ask about bringing a vehicle into FL the first time. Fees may be higher the first year.
Sorry don't know how to do clicky thingy.
