Generator while driving

Newb here again....

What are the pros and cons to running the generator while driving? I'm reading conflicting responses, for keeping the fridge cold or using roof AC while on the road.

Thanks

    Enjoy the AC!

You are correct. The extra fuel for the generator was the only real con I could think of for running it while driving.
  • I only run the gen while driving when the dash AC can’t keep up by itself. I’ll then run the gen and turn on the roof AC, then keep it on until I am ready to plug in the power cord. As the cold air hits the floor, the cool air is sucked in by the dash AC and it runs better also. At least that’s my thoughts.

I don't know of any real cons. The fuel you burn running the generator is mostly offset by not running the dash A/C.

What are the conflicts you are reading? Maybe we can help you better if we know your concerns.

  • When driving a motorhome I have to use the roof air when crossing the Southern AZ desert this time of year as the dash air is almost useless.

Great way to exercise the Ginny. Just make sure you have enough fuel. Ours will kick out at a quarter of a tank.

In hot weather we try and leave early and only run generator for a couple of hours at end of day’s drive.

The only time I run my generator is if I need to run the roof air. I run my refrigerator (residential type) off my inverter. The alternator keeps the batteries charged.
If you have an absorption unit I would run it on propane.
On the outher side the only negative is you are using more fuel that if you don't need to run the roof air it isn't necessary.

  • I am frugal, so I'll run the roof air and generator about 2 hours before stopping for the day.
