Help with how picking a state works

Lets take things from another direction. I now live in NC have a home here etc. So next year I decide to sell my home, jump in my RV and leave NC. At that point I'm no more tethered to NC because I no longer live there. I couldn't keep my drivers license and plates for long because I no longer have a NC address.

So it seems to me unless you choose FL SD or TX and use a mailing service who provides an address you're really pretty much out of luck.

Even if I moved to Arizona and rented an apartment and got a drivers license and plates. Once I moved into a motorhome (no address) I couldn't keep the Arizona licenses anyway because I have no address!

So, Florida, South Dakota and Texas are your only real choices... Where am I going wrong?

Not really true. Many states have mail forwarding services that offer a physical address to use for domicile. The 3 mentioned are the most often used because of the lack of state income tax. As one example FMCA has a mail forwarding service in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Many others use family or friends mailing address to set up their physical addresses. Since 9-11 all states do require residence in that state at the time of Declaration of Domicile and attaining a driver's license in that state. The residency requirements vary state to state. The DMV site for each state should give all the info you need.

I use St. Brendan's Isle mail forwarding service in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Their web site has all the various forms for Declaration of Domicile, Driver's License, vehicle registration and voter registration. I would suspect most mail forwarding services also provide this info. We used this info to change our domicile from NY to Florida in January. It was fairly painless.
