Active duty military here. What branch? When folks talk tight space, I have a diffferent definition after repeated deployments at sea. Of course spouse has to agree.
Lot's of RV parks on military bases that can cut down cost while traveling but not all are in good site seeing areas. There is one in Ventura County near Malibu that is in a great location.
I would be concerned about your price point for a tow vehicle and TT. I remember returning from Japan and needing to buy two vehicles at once. No fun. Check out the Class C forum including the thread on buying a used rental. You might be able to a get a small used C for $30k and get away without a towed. The big question is how long do you intend to stay in one place. The more you move, the better an RV is over a TT. The more you stay put, the more economical a TT is. You can stay in Walmart, Cabellas, etc. with either for overnight stops but I think the RV is a little easier and safer if you are stopping at a rest stop for a night's sleep.
Check out threads on state parks. That will save money. Boondocking as well for the portion when you are out west.
Finally, how much will you use it after the year or two on the road? I could get by with a small RV for a year or two but for final retirement, I'll want more space. Another reason to look used for the temporary adventure.
Have fun! We've made two cross countries adventures with our popup during PCS leave.
