Insurance For Full-Time RVing

I will be living in an RV starting in September and I will need some insurance on the RV. I think I have read here that some companies will not issue a policy for the RV if you live in it full time. Can someone explain how this works and recommend the best companies to get a quote?
  • I think Escapees forum with many member TX residents recommend Miller Insurance Agency who can quote full-timers policies with different companies. We have ours with Progressive.
  • 1. Be wary of company recommendations. Insurance companies often have different policies, different coverages and different rates in different States.
    2. If you are a full timer you need to disclose this to your insurer or agent. You need the appropriate coverage and you need to know the insurer is going to cover you as a full timer.
    3. As a full timer you need to make sure your policy covers personal property. Personal property is often covered by homeowners and is omitted or very limited for part time RV insurance. Without homeowners you may have little or no personal property coverage.
    4. I recommend you use an independent insurance agent who understands full timer insurance. Then read the fine print before you make a decision on the coverage.
    5. I suggest you consider an umbrella policy to provide or extend personal liability coverage.
  • X2 on what both "Optimistic Paranoid" and "JimK-NY" said. We are insured with USAA. They know we are full-timers and have configured coverage for all three vehicles (truck, car, RV), RV contents, the stuff we left in storage, and a VPP (valuable personal property) rider. Coverage includes plenty of liability.

  • USAA does NOT provide the liability coverage that a full time RV should also have. If you also have a home with liability insurance you may not need this but true full timer does not have this coverage and it needs to be included in your RV insurance.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, Bill. I have had thorough discussions with USAA (have been with them for over 35 years and insured multiple homes and vehicles with them). Renter's and umbrella policies have us well covered.
