Medical insurance

Wife and I are committed to selling pretty much everything and full timing. Medical insurance premiums are a huge concern for us (we can handle anything else). I am curious what non-Medicaid full timers are paying? We are both 50 and take low doses of blood pressure meds ( we are working hard to get off of them). We are thinking of $2500 deductible plans to keep premiums down and just cover the deductible if needed. I know Obama care will change things but it's anyone's guess by how much. Any advice or experience would be appreciated.

October 1st prices will be available.
Make sure the company you choose will cover you when you travel out of state. Some HMO's don't.
  • Don't want to turn this into a political topic, but wait a few more days until October 1st when registration for the new the state healthcare exchanges begin. Costs will be online beginning October 1st.
  • I'm playing the waiting game myself. I'm retiring in December and I won't be medicare eligible for another five years. I can get some high deductible insurance through my employer, but I won't know the cost until November. I also have the option of Cobra for 18 months, but once again, I won't know the cost until November. Finally, I guess I can see what the ACA costs will be, but that won't be until at least next month too.

So I'm holding my breath and hoping that I'll be able to afford health care and didn't make a stupid mistake by retiring too early.

BTW, due to very serious cardiac issues being able to purchase insurance on my own before 2014 was virtually impossible.
  • If you do a search you can find many, many discussions of this topic. If you are relatively healthy you can purchase temporary 6 month policies that have higher deductible for reasonable prices from www.ehealthinsurance.com. If you pay the 6 month premium up front you get an additional 20% off. We have been using them for years and they have been fine. We pay for our own prescriptions on the Walmart or Target $4 list. You just renew them every 6 months, it's no problem.
