Passport Requirements To Mexico For Dental Work

Under a separate post, I have asked for and received some excellent recommendations for dental work to be done in Mexico. I'm sure I can find information on passports through Google, but I am interested in knowing first hand experience. Is a passport checked when Americans go across the border for dental work? If you have a passport, how long did you have to wait? If a passport is absolutely needed, is a passport card as acceptable? Since I've never had a passport, all input is greatly appreciated! THANKS!

  • Get the passport - makes things a lot easier when using it for identification with financial institutions, changes drivers licenses to a new state, etc.

  • We have only used the Passport Card. It is accepted for land and vehicle crossing but not for air travel. Lines depend on the time of year and the amount of traffic going back and forth. We have always walked across at Algodones. One time, when DW had her oral surgery, I had to drive because she wasn't going to be able to walk afterward. That crossing took significantly longer but she was blissfully unaware in the passenger seat.

You don't need one to get into Mexico but you really should have one to get back.

Good luck with your Dental care! No way would I go there for that!

Get the forms from the post office and pic at Costco. Should not take more than a couple weeks.
  • Passport Card is acceptable at border town locations. Interior travel, I believe a Passport is needed.

Walking across the border at Acuna, never a wait.
Driving across can be up to an hour, depending on time of day.

Entering Mexico at Acuna, no Passport Check, returning to the US, they check passports (cards)

    Easy in, and Easy Out.
