Bad Service

I am posting this letter for a member of our Good Sam Chapter who does not use RV.net. I know it is too early to see if they get reimbursed or not but the service is so bad I posted it.

RE: Request for Claim Reimbursement for 7/13/2014 towing

Please find attached my Request for Claim Reimbursement and Towing Receipt for $472.00. I expect reimbursement by return mail.

We were let stranded in dangerous spot when our 2005 Diesel Ram 2500 lost a water pump, west bound on Hwy 26 approximately 12 miles east of Government Camp, Oregon with our 2010 Open Range 5th Wheel in tow. I had no Verizon Cell service.

A young couple, who was camping near-by and were en-route to Government Camp for ice, stopped to see if they could help. They lent me their cell phone and I called the # listed on our Good Sam Roadside Assistance card (800-947-0770). When asked if we were in safe place, I responded we were on the shoulder but not a real safe place (on a curve of a two lane heavily used highway with lots of semi- truck whizzing by at 55+ mph). First she tried to dispatch a mobile service truck, then a tow to The Dalles, OR. I’d been on hold 45+ minutes on a borrowed cell phone, when the couple left me with their phone and went to Government Camp for ice. When they returned for their phone, Roadside Assistance still hadn’t dispatched a tow, Roadside Assistance told me, she couldn’t find anyone to tow both units (pickup truck and a 28 foot 5th wheel). Roadside Assistance held on the phone, while the husband called a Government Camp tow company. That company took all my information and said they had dispatched a tow truck. When I asked Roadside Assistance if Good Sam would pay for the tow bill, she told me I’d have to submit a Claim by calling the Roadside Assistance # during business hours.

Several people stopped to see if we needed help, we said we had ordered a tow truck. In the meantime two other rigs broke down behind us, but they both were able to proceed.

As we waited for the tow truck the pickup and 5th wheel shook and swayed as traffic sped by. We went into the edge of the woods for safety. But then there were thunderstorms with lightning and hail. So we went back to the pickup. Several time vehicles slid around the corner and just missed crashing into us.

Several hours later we flagged down a tow truck, he couldn’t help us because he was out of Prineville, OR. He told us there was a rollover accident about 6 miles east of us and the troopers and emergency services were tied up there.

I had no way a re-contacting Good Sam Roadside Service

A couple of hours later a Forest Service Ranger stopped, then a OS trooper in a pickup with a dead bear that had been hit and Oregon State Trooper. Trooper XXXXXX contacted Purdy Towing and said they would take about 40 minutes to get there. Troop XXXXXX said, Good Sam Roadside Service was noted for keeping people on hold for 45 minutes or more.

Within 45 minutes Purdy Towing was there hooking up to the truck and disconnecting the driveline. He towed truck and 5th wheel together to Sandy and a repair shop. The tow truck driver said Good Sam called them earlier in the day but refused to authorize the tow to Sandy. We could have been safely off the road in a short time, if Good Sam Roadside service had authorized the service in the first place. The next morning we got the truck fixed and were on our way within 2 hours.

I called roadside service when we returned home and was told I needed fill out and submit a Request for Claim Reimbursement. I had to request that the form be sent to me. I just received it today and am submitting with this letter.

After sharing our bad Good Sam Roadside Assistance experience, I learn ours is not unique and that it is almost impossible to get reimbursement from them.

Good Sam Roadside Assistance is giving Good Sam Club a bad name and corrections need to be made or discontinue the service.

I previously had AAA and was completely satisfied but your advertisement promises sounded so good and was less expensive. I regret switching.

Please expedite my reimbursement.

Sincerely yours,

Good Sam Club member for 5 years.
