This topic just gets me boiling. Had the same thing happen when I changed ins. company, with a 20 percent rate increase the first year due to absolutely no fault of my own. Basically the ins. co. answer when I called boils down to "we need the money". They are not going to let their profits suffer. They keep paying out for frivolous lawsuits (you know, the whiplash claim from a parking lot bump-not minimizing legitimate injuries, but there are far too many fake ones) because it's too expensive to fight them. And, as the OP said, you pay because you are part of the "pool" that includes all the bad drivers and anyone else who makes a claim. Sad thing is, other than bouncing around from company to company every 6/12 months hoping for a better rate, there is nothing we can do since we are required to have insurance.
