Camping locations for less

My wife and i are getting ready to retire and travel in a forest river travel trailer. I was just wondering how you can keep your charges down at camp sights. Will they give you a break on daily price and if so how long do you have to stay. We could stay most places for a month. We love the travel, and want to go south in the winter and north in the summer. Each trip will last 3 months and we will stay home 3 months in the spring to summer and fall to winter. Seems like a good idea but we have paid as much as 50 dollars a night for a place to camp. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

  • As has been said the monthly rate is the best rate you are going to get , for the most part. That being said RPI is an even better rate. It is 10 or 15 dollars a night depending on your membership. I don't know of any restrictions on them. The next best rate is passport America, but like has been said there are restrictions on it. At the campground we manage if you stay for 2 weeks it is cheaper to pay the monthly rate.
  • If you do not have rvparky app on your computer and phone, get it. A world of information on places to camp.
  • When I hit the road full time I bought ALL the CG club memberships.

I found they all had waaay too many restrictions to get a discount and many of the CG's listed when called said they don't give the discounts anymore. Or you had to stay the 3rd Tuesday of the month to get a discount etc. etc. etc. Threw them all in the trash.

Just travel and when you find a CG that you stop for the night that you really like ask for the monthly rate. All CG's whether they list it or not have a monthly rate and it IS a way cheaper way to RV. :C
  • Do you want to camp in RV parks with full hookups or do you like more natural settings? If you're at least 62 years old you'll qualify for a federal senior pass.

The pass gives you free admission to federal parks and 1/2 price camping at most federal campgrounds. This includes Corp of Engineer parks which often have electric hookups and are usually scenic with roomy sites.

National park and national forest campgrounds are also 1/2 price.

  • It depends on your length of stay. In general, it is cheapest to stay on a monthly rate (or even a seasonal rate). Just checked one of our local RV parks, and what they charge seems fairly common: The rates there indicate that the daily highest rate at just under $40+tax whereas the monthly rate comes out on a nightly basis to about $16.50+electric.

In general, clubs like Passport America can get you a 50% discount, but that's off the daily rate, not the monthly rate, and your length of stay at that rate is usually restricted to a short period (and often to certain time periods as well). In other words, it's a good source of savings for short-term stays.

What you might consider, however, is an outfit like the Escapees, which runs a few of its own parks at very good rates.

  • Well 'Coast to Coast' (what this forum section is about) is a private membership program that you buy. 1st you have to buy into a home park with Coast to Coast affiliation and then pay yearly dues for home park & C2C.
Depending on which one.....Classic or Deluxe you can stay at C2C affiliate campgrounds for up to 7 days or up to 14 days for $10/15 night.

At other campgrounds...public etc. you can lower your sites costs by staying weekly, monthly or seasonal.

Passport America is another way of cutting costs......they are a discount program ($44/yr) that gives a 50% discount off of daily rate at participating CGs. BUT there are restrictions.......some only allow 1 night discount, some no weekends, some no prime time etc.
