Deceptive Marketing

Hi Exeter_acres,

Anyone can opt of direct mail at any time by calling Member Services at 1-800-234-3450. For your convenience, we went ahead and opted you out of all direct mail. Please keep in mind it will take a few weeks for the mailings to stop.

Now that the topic from the original poster’s concern has been addressed we are closing this thread.

I have searched the Good Sam website and can find NO option to opt out of direct mail. I can find no notice that informs me how I can opt out. As a new RV'er, I joined Good Sams for the information I thought I would get and the discounts at KOA and Camping World. Little did I know that I would be the target of unending junk mail.

I figured that Good Sam was an organization like the AAA that provides services for members and is, itself, non-profit and dedicated to the betterment of RV enjoyment and safety. Apparently that is not the case. Since I joined this June, I have received no less than 10 solicitations a month for everything from extended warranties, RV insurance, to emergency road service.

All of these junk mails were printed in the Good Sam colors and had the logo plastered all over them. I have yet to receive a single letter or email with information of genuine use to me; just advertisements. I paid $25 bucks to get inundated with junk mail. I like the camping world discount, but nothing else about this so-called club.

What happened? Was it always just a crass commercial enterprise?

One other important thing: You can opt out of junk email on the Good Sam site, but you can't opt out of junk postal mail. This is a clear indication that Good Sam isn't our friend. the CANSPAM act requires emailers to permit opt-out, but no such benefit applies to postal mail.

If, in fact, Good Sam is really member driven, how about letting us opt out of the postal ads too?

I have personally researched your account. We did, in fact, receive your information from our valued partner, Pilot Flying J, in January of this year in order to provide you with a complimentary one year trial membership to the Good Sam Club. Pilot Flying J's records show that you signed up for their loyalty card on January 27, 2011 but we did not extend the trial Good Sam Club membership to you until late January 2013. You should have received a Good Sam Club Welcome Kit in February 2013 explaining your complimentary membership and providing you with your membership card. I apologize if you did not receive this information and have not been aware of your trial membership. The letter that you received was not an invoice, but a notification that your Good Sam Club membership will be expiring in a few months. At your request, we have removed your name from our mailing list, but please know that your membership is still valid until January of 2014. There is absolutely no obligation for you to continue your membership or utilize any of the Good Sam Club benefits. Again, I apologize for any confusion.

This is why when Good Sams and Camping World, merged together, I dropped CW. I has GS years ago, and the mail from them helped start a lot of fires in the fireplace at home and camping. Yes the Presidents club was good for a few good discounts, not worth the aggervation of the Junk mail. We have got most of the junk mail that we were getting stopped, but there are a few that still wonn't give in. I still get Camping World sales flyers, but with on line shopping I can usually beat the prices.

thank you for posting, I looked at the membership number you provided to see how it was acquired. In January 2013, our partners, Pilot and Flying J, gave you a free year of Good Sam Club as a courtesy for being a fuel card customer with them.

I have suppressed all of your mail including renewal notices going forward. You should see a stop in the mail offers within 10-14 days I just can't stop anything they may have already dropped this week.

I signed up for the Flying J loyalty card when i bought the RV... about 4 years ago... and that turned out to be a waste of time too...
haven't used that in about 2 years
