Don't trust the GSRA phone people
Recently I threw a rod in my 37' Class A. I disconnected my toad, drove down the highway until I found cell service, and called GSRA and told them that I needed a Big tow truck and that my engine would have to be taken out. After sitting alongside the road for about an hour they called back and informed me that they couldn't find a tow truck big enough within a 45 mile radius, but that if I found one on my own, and submitted an invoice, they would consider paying me back. They also told me that they had talked to the highway patrol dispatcher, and if I called him he could get one for me. They even gave me his phone number. They also told me to take the RV to the Ford dealer in the next town; that they had talked to the service manager who said that he could fix it.
Since we were in 1X cell service and couldn't access the net, we called the HP dispatcher. He gave us the name and phone numbers of two companies that could tow us. The first one didn't answer, but the second one said that he could be out in about 3 hours, which we passed along to GSRA. When he showed up he questioned taking us to the Ford dealer, and said that the big RV's usually went to this truck shop in town. But since GSRA had said that the dealer could fix the problem, that's where we went.
Now it gets crazy. When the dealer listened to the engine, he said that it would have to come out and that he couldn't do that. So we called GSRA again for a tow to the place that could do the job (the same place that the tow truck driver had recommended). First they contracted with the guy that had brought us in to tow us over to the truck shop, then they changed there mind and arranged to have a DIFFERENT tow truck, from a town 40 miles away to tow us. When he showed up, he said that he couldn't tow my rig. The original tow driver (who's shop was 1 block away and was still under the impression that he was towing us) finally took us to the truck repair shop (which was about 3 blocks away). Then GSRA said that, since we called the HP, and sent our rig to the wrong shop, they were not going to pay either tow! After about an hour of heated discussion, they offered to pay the short tow (since they sent us there) but I would have to pay the long one because I called HP dispatch (like I was told to do). Some more discussion and they finally paid the long tow and we paid the short one.
One final thing; I can't find anywhere in the lit that says that if I call HP, my towing is no longer covered! Especially since all HP did was give me a couple of leads. So I guess the lesson is that you should never get the cops involved! And trust the tow driver, not the GSRA as to where to take your rig.
