I agree 4 months is too early for notification. However, we were on vacation and our home & ranch insurance on our stick home expired. We just missed it. Our agent called 2 weeks after it expired and asked if we insured with someone else. Yipes!!!. All turned out ok but could have been worse.
Back in the days off old before this great internet we had auto renewal on all bills.That isn't problem free either. When we sold that stick home and canceled a few kept renewing anyway. I closed out accounts to stop it. Then I got the nasty letters. Been there done that and don't choose that route with anybody anymore. JMHO
