Extended Service Plan

We just purchased a 2004 Itasca Horizon. Obviously an older coach but it's in very good condition and only has 60,000 miles (I consider that low for a 13 yr old diesel). I'm considering an extended service plan. I've read the marketing hype. But whether it's worth the cost or not largely depends on how the administrator handles claims. Does anyone have any experiences they'd care to share?

  • When I got my coachman Cl c in 2013, I got one. It was 7K. Recently I had to have some plumbing work done that was about 1.2K I was glad I had it, but when I do the math I realize I am still out of 5.8K. So it is a gamble, I guess it depends on how one wants to "gamble". Just IMHO

  • I have had 2 claims and both were handled very well. I paid my deductible and GS paid the shop by credit card same day of pickup.

This is an insurance policy basically. You decide if the insurance is worth it to have in case of big problems. In my case it has been. It does pay to read everything carefully but it doesn't cost anything to get a quote to help make up your mind after you read it.
  • First of all, it is not an "Extended Service Plan." There is no service offered. You are buying an "Extended Warranty" which is actually an insurance plan where they agree to pay for certain repairs if an item fails in exchange for the money you pay upfront. These plans are often have many loopholes that keep them from paying and many hoops you have to jump through to get them to pay. The classic is, "If a uncovered part fails and causes a covered part to fail, the covered part is not covered." Furthermore, the people writing these policies know what parts are likely to fail, and specifically exclude them from coverage. YOU WOULD BE VERY WISE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ACTUAL CONTRACT INSTEAD OF THE SALES BROCHURE.

I am considering the Good Sam ESP, not a dealer offering. I'm fairly comfortable the chasis is in good shape. Having it serviced at Massey's Diesel. I'm more concerned with the coach appliances and such because of the age of the unit. Everything is in working order now but mechanical and electronic things do fail with age.

You can get all new appliances for less than you will pay for the extended warranty.

We got ours through Wholesale Warranties. Our concern is the engine/ chassis.

The other stuff, we have always fixed ourselves. No appliance costs 10-15k!

  • There have probably been nudreds of threads on that here. The concensus is dont do it. They don't like to pay and your money ahead just putting the funds aside in case its needed.
But if you go ahead, just realize the prices aren't written in stone and the dealer makes a ton of money off them. I would offer them less than half what they want.
