Florida to California

We will be leaving from Cape Canaveral Florida to southern CA in December. We are taking the Southern route due to the cold weather. Our first stop is Destin, FL, and then on to the deep south. We would like to stay central so we can visit New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Natchez, and others...any suggestions for a campsite in that area and other things to see? We would like to stay one month. Then on to Texas. We know it will be colder but this is the time we have to leave.
  • It might have snowed there for a few minutes once in all of recorded history. I can pretty well guarantee you'll never see it.
  • We intend on staying way south. But, I dont think it will warm up until we reach Texas.
We drove from San Diego to Anchorage Alaska and back. It took us almost 3 months, but we were in a Jeep & tent. This time we have a few more luxuries in a 31 ft Minnebago. We have reservations in Destin, FL from Dec 6 for one week. Somebody told us it snows there sometimes. OMG...I sure hope not. We know Dec, Jan & Feb are going to be rough. If its too cold in Louisiana we will just head for south Texas.
  • I just gotta jump into this. As somebody who spent a lot of his life doing exactly what Hemi Joel wants to do and enjoying the hell out of it and having many fond memories of those trips I say do it. We are all different. Some are exhausted after 200 miles on the road and others can do 500 easily and maybe a couple hundred more just for the heck of it.

Your route will most likely be determined by the weather pending on the day you pull out. It may require some zigzagging or you may be able to just head straight west on the route of your choice. But if it were me I'd stay way south.
  • I want to stay in central Texas location as we will be there one month. We want to do Dallas, Houston, Auston, San Antonio, etc. We are pulling a car. So we will park the RV & take car for sightseeing.
  • Thanks, I will look up that LA campground. This is our first time going in an RV. We have done shorter trips in a jeep. But, we expect to be out more than 6 months. yikes - if we can handle it?
  • Hope to be going in the opposite direction next year(Ca-Florida) so will keep my eye of this thread. We will also be following the Southern route(I-10) more than likely and will be hitting and wanting to stay here and there along the route. Have a Great time!
  • We liked Bayou Segnette State Park for visiting New Orleans. You can drive to the Algiers Ferry which takes you to the French Quarter. Be sure to go west to I-310 and take US90 to the state park and exit back that way. We hated going from I-10 to US90. Natchez is 3 hours north of New Orleans. If you want to visit Natchez, we like River View RV Park in Vidalia LA right on the MS River. Be sure to visit the WWII Museum in New Orleans. Drive to Avery Island to the Tabasco Factory and take the short tour and check out their gift shop. In Texas Balmorhea State Park is beautiful. Fort Davis is near there and worth the drive.
  • Stop in Breaux Bridge, La and camp in Poches. Food and area is great. Over in Texas, try to stay around Galveston gulf area.
