Good Sam Finance, Bank of the West DBA Essex Credit Corp

Hello Fellow GS Members,

I wanted to share with you the frustration we have gone through in using the GS finance. The company in the subject line is terrible and I would not recommend them to anyone. I was finally able to complete the last process in purchasing a motorhome (started the process 4/6/2021) which was completing the licensing and title yesterday and now have my license plate and registration which after several emails and voice mails to Essex went unreturned.

I was getting ready to call on Tuesday again, try a customer support number different from the loan adviser when my phone rang and it was a 3rd party MVD company asking me if I was purchasing an RV and if I had provided a VIN verification and I said no, that I was attempting to find out where the lender was in the process of the title and registration. They mentioned they had received the required information from the lender and needed to verify the VIN about 2 weeks ago and thought since I lived in the same town they would try and reach out to me before sending everything back as the documentation was missing the VIN verification. I was very thankful they called as Essex had not reached out to me at all informing to contact this company.

Here is an email that I sent to GS, Mr. Lemonis has a statement on everything they send stating that if your not happy he isn't happy. I would say that within an hour after emailing him Essex Credit called me to let me know where were in the process and the next steps to complete the loan....never heard from them after that, just received loan documents that needed to be notarized about a month later. Returned them and much later found out our loan had funded. Then nothing again from Essex. I have since renewed my membership with GS, but do worry about all the other products they offer, if they all operate like the finance department, GS is in serious trouble. I know this is lengthy and I am sorry. Here is the letter I referred to:

Good Morning Sir,

I am emailing you regarding the Good Sam Finance company that represents the Good Sam name and how they are dragging it through the mud. Essex Credit Corp. a division of Bank of the West is really doing the Good Sam name an injustice. I applied for a loan with them on or about 4/6/2021 and finally received an approval on 4/10/2021. As you know RV sales are up extensively and are selling quickly, so while waiting on the determination the motorhome we were wanting to purchase sold. We had found another one that was a private party sale and I emailed Good Sam Finance to ask if they loaned on private party sales as some lenders don’t, and by the time we received a response approximately 7 days later, that Motorhome along with a couple others has sold as well.

I have currently found one and have submitted the required documentation and information and now my concern is that they will actually fund the loan prior to the purchase agreement expiring on 2 June, 2021. If the loan isn’t complete by then we stand to loose $5K in earnest money. This company carrying the Good Sam name does not respond to emails in a timely fashion and has yet to return a phone call which we have left several over the last month. Very disappointing. We choose this finance company since they did have the Good Sam name thinking we would be in the best hands and have found that to be so far from the truth that is it pathetic. I do know Essex Credit is probably extremely busy and their website says to allow 24-48 hours for a response, however, as mentioned it is taking 7-8 days to receive a response by email, we have given up on them responding via telephone call. Sad part is I mentioned I went with the Good Sam name but should have done some research, this link will take you to the BBB and you can see, there are several complaints for the same reasons; https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.bbb.org_us_ca_san-2Dramon_profile_loans_essex-2Dcredit-2Dcorporation-2Da-2Ddivision-2Dof-2Dbank-2Dof-2Dthe-2Dwest-2D1116-2D51443_customer-2Dreviews&d=DwIFaQ&c=gNE65dwZP0Hcfcb645T97wzOPK9u7T1np0JNzEfNCyI&r=zbwRy7tGidDNXifiUBj0_TsRlNEe7Vy9z8YiY6mhmB0&m=8hiVZ35RyTTWAma4rm-tsO4XF42DouaT64-wziIPcSI&s=QJRsTG0FkShn_B3sICW4gMdPXan7haFF3W7SwWc9ppY&e=

I mention all this because we were Good Sam members (we sold our last RV 3 years ago), our membership lapsed a year ago as we were not sure if we would purchase another RV. Well, that has changed and are hoping to purchase one provided the funding gets some attention and approved due to the lack of attention and us being updated on or if the loan is being processed. My concern is that we placed our faith in the Good Sam name, we had every intention of renewing our membership again and taking advantage of all the wonderful products and protective services the Good Sam Club offers, however, we are not sure that we can do that now for fear of poor customer service with all Good Sam affiliates based on the Good Sam finance model. If Essex Credit Corporation is setting the standard, then sir, the Good Sam Club is headed for disaster.

Our loan should be simple, we have a 0 debt to income ratio and are platinum with our credit score, however, we may not know as they don’t communicate. I do hope that you will look into Essex Credit Corp and hopefully make adjustments for future buyers and club members. We do look forward to your response. Have a wonderful day.

Thank you for reading the entire post. I hope this helps others looking to finance an RV with Good Sam Finance.
  • Hello Stephen & Nancy,
There is no excuse for the experience you've had with the Good Sam Finance Center. I am in contact with Essex/Bank of the West on your behalf. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me directly on this issue.

    Sincerely,
    Robyn Barnes
  • Thank you Ms. Barnes, just don't want any others to go through the same experience we did. May want to choose another finance institution, there were some out there that offered great rates and may fit the GS model much better than Bank of the West/Essex Credit Corp.
  • In 2003 I financed a late model used travel trailer directly with Bank of The West at a low interest rate. Loan was arranged thru a San Marcos Texas RV dealer (Camping World of San Antonio on I 35) and after 7 years I paid the loan off early at B of the West in Reno with no problems. I was also a GS member for several years but glad not anymore.

Then there was no Essex Credit involved and I never heard of them until now in my financing or purchase of the TT. USAA would not make a loan on used RVs then so I went with B of W. From date of purchase to loan approval and trailer tags took about a week to 10 days as I remember. I put up $1000 as down payment or maybe it was earnest money. As with everything else they seem to be adding more middle men to every process/activity. Good luck to you
  • NamMedevac, happy to hear it worked out for you, maybe it would have been a different story had I been dealing with Bank of the West directly...

Thank you for your service!! Always happy to hear from a fellow Veteran....
  • Good reasons to arrange your financing either thru the dealership or your local bank or credit union. The sellers in your instance have no actual idea if they will actually get paid with a loan pending approval. From Essex (Bank of the West) point of view, they need to do their due diligence that they are actually financing an RV with adequate collateral value. That does take time, especially when you are dealing with an individual buyer and seller. A private seller could be selling a rig with a rebuilt title or the buyer could be buying a wrecked rig looking to get a big cash rebate from the seller.
Dealerships have relationships with their lenders, so the lenders accept the fact that the collateral is as described and the deal is on the up and up. Your local bank or credit union has a level of trust with you, again eliminating some of the risk associated with dealing with two completely unknown parties. What the OP is trying to do is just going to be slower than other methods of funding a purchase. It isn't incompetence, it is just the way things work in the real world.
  • wapiticountry we did look to our CU first and other local ones however, their rates were about 1.5% higher. After the email was sent to Mr. Lemonis, Essex started moving fast to include having the coach inspected doing their due diligence…

The point here is GS Finance offered a great rate and we placed our faith in the GS name and this lender failed in their customer service and is ruining the GS brand and standard as we knew it.
