The problem with any road side assistance program is that you are at the mercy of the person you talk to. Some will work with you and provide excellent service while others seem to that that you are a bother and interrupting their day. I'm sure there are others that fit in between and provide mediocre service at best.
Sounds to me like you found several of the worse ones. Good Sam really needs to upgrade their training of the people who answer the phones. Getting more and more stories like this one.
