It is cheaper for you to be able to get the tire yourself and have it doe yourself at a shop. But you have to think about what the additional cost is paying for. Of course you got the tire cost. Then you do have the time of finding the tire. Yes you can do this on your own, but someone else is doing it and there are costs for that. Then you have the cost of whoever is taking the call to replace your tire to go to the location and get the tire and en come out to you. Then the costs of mounting that tire on the side of the road there. It can be expensive when you to have someone do it. Just think about those with motorhomes that don't carry spares. Many of them can't. And even if they could, they do not have the equipment to change the tire. Their costs are way more expensive. Yes its by choice of theirs.
