Had to use GSRA yesterday

Yesterday was the first time I unfortunately had to use the GSRA service. I called at 5:45pm on Sunday because I had run out of gas while towing. I spent 25 minutes on the phone waiting to find out when someone could potentially come out. When they came back they said it'd be almost 8pm before someone could come out there with gas. We also called the Florida Highway Patrol to get help from the Road Rangers. We thought they may be able to come faster. I Called FHP at about 6:15pm after getting off with GSRA. They said they'd send someone out, but they never got there. GSRA told me that many of their providers didn't want to come out because it was Sunday evening and it was too far. I think that frustrated me more than anything. Don't TELL me that your providers suck. Just tell me when someone will be here to help. Telling me that most people said no means you need to find better service providers. The company that did agree to come out estimated 8pm and showed up at 7:30, which was a bonus. Granted it was 90 degrees out with my girlfriend and 3 dogs in the truck and we're inches from the white line in a non-shoulder area with the passenger side in the grass, so every minute passed slowly to say the least. I was really frustrated when I Was told that it'd be 2.5 hours from the time I called to the time I was going to receive help. I considered walking to go get gas, but unfortunately there was lots of construction and no safe place to walk the 2 miles to the gas station. I was asked if I was in a safe place by GSRA and I said...not really, I'm on the shoulder but I can't say it's safe. Their response was to call 911! I mean c'mon...I get why you might offer that, but should I really be calling 911 because I'm out of gas on the side of the road? Basically, it seemed like if I wasn't in a safe place that they wouldn't come out, so I told them it was fine and I'd wait.

In the end, I was glad to have the service available to me, as it was only $5 out of pocket for the gas, but the response time was definitely frustrating.

The amazing and awful part of it all was that after my low fuel light came on I only got 4.5 miles before I ran out of gas. I think there was definitely something wrong with the fuel used for this last leg of the 1000 mile trip from MD to FL. We were getting 4 hours per tank prior and this tank only lasted 2 hours. Typically when my low fuel light comes on while towing, I get at least 30 miles. This time I got 4.5 miles.....RIDICULOUS! AND this was Shell gas, not some cheapo brand.

  • Sorry to read that you ran out of gas. Glad it (eventually) turned out okay for you.

We seem to read more GSRA complaints from people who travel on Sunday. It makes me think about not traveling on Sunday anymore.
  • Thanks for posting. That's interesting to read. I'm thinking if this is worth the cost or not. I did a quick search and found GSRA offered one place for $70 per year. I estimate I would need it about once per year. What would it cost you to call someone and pay them to come out to the middle of nowhere (say where you were) and how long would that normally take? Any idea? If we're talking $100 and it's much faster I probably choose door number 2 (not GSRA). If it would be $200 and 2 hours then I think I would take GSRA.
