Never give your real phone number or any email address to companies asking for it. They'll tell you they never give out out or sell it, it's just so they can contact you in case of recalls, etc.
Also, the Do Not Call registry is a joke. It means nothing to these companies, because they know the FCC has no teeth and does not enforce it. It also does not apply to cell phones, although they will accept your number on the on-line form.
In the end, they only know what you tell them.
And as far as feeling sorry for the solicitors, not gonna happen. Call me once, I'll politely tell them I'm not interested and not to call again. Second time, I get nasty. Third time, the very loud air horn comes out. They usually stop after that blast.
