Leaving Allstate Arriving Good Sam
I've been an Allstate RV assistance member for a long time, 15 years maybe. I had a flat tire while in Custer, SD last September. I called and ended up with some third world person who's first language was not English, and whom I could barely understand. Tried again, same problem, so I pressed on.
The person kept asking for some sort of "ID number" from the coach to verify membership. I gave them every number I could find, to no avail. After about an hour I gave up. I figured since I had been a member for so many years, and had used them in the past, all the necessary information would have been stored.
Fortunately since it was only a flat tire issue, and I was only a few miles from town, in an RV park I found a repair facility on my own, got the flat fixed, paid the bill and was off and running.
Sent the bill in and got paid.
I called Allstate to talk to someone about my experience and with three different people never did get someone who (a) I could understand, (b) seemed to care.
So I decided not to renew and go with Good Sam.
A couple of weeks ago I get a call from someone whom it appeared did have English as his first language. Wanted to know if I would be renewing. (I had already cancelled my auto renew by my credit card) I said no and gave him the details of my experience and the reasons I was not renewing.
He seemed sympathetic and actually went on to say this was not the first instance of call center/representative problems he had heard, something I find disturbing since if they have heard of the problem, why was it not fixed.
To make a long story even longer, I have decided to go with Good Sam, and take advantage of the Platinum + Plan's "first timer" discount. When it comes time to renew I can then decide if I want to keep paying the higher cost or go to one of the other less expensive plans.
I spend a lot of time on the road, (chasing motor racing events) to the tune of 16,000 miles a year on my 2005 Dutch Star (bought new in May 2005) and have had a few issues, some which I used the road side assist, (rear suspension air valve rod broke) while others I just took care of myself (replaced the coach batteries while at Talladega Superspeedway.) I do all my own service and for the most part maintenance (I keep the unit garaged) to include filter and fluid changes in the two months I'm not on the road. I do take it to the Spartan factory each year for a checkup and any major issue repair they find.
Hopefully will never need any assistance, but willing to give Good Sam a try. Have hear and read pretty good reviews here and from friends who use it.
Probably should not have posted this as I may now end up with a blown engine, dropped transmission, and six flat tires all at the same time! Hah!
