I just joined GS and read my membership brochure. Right there it spells out the tow policy and offers the option to be towed to another location (instead of a service center) if you pay the difference in distance if there is one. I assume it would still be free if the distance to another location was the same as or less than that to the authorized service center. But that would be something to check on.
