More interested in renewing than service

I was taking my 1975 GMC Eleganza II to Orlando to get some work done on it but broke down in Lake City, Fl @ I-75. I called GS. This was on Halloween evening (a Sat.) The operator wanted to tow me to a dealer 3 miles away because they service GM products. I tried to explain this is a TZE chassis that is 41 years old and there just isn't that much service available on them. She insisted they could service it because it is GM. I would have been taken to a closed dealer and waited until Monday morning before I would probably be told they could not do anything to it. Both Holland Motor Homes and a local mechanic who works on the antique cars for the local clubs had done the limits they were capable of. I ended up paying $819. to be towed to Orlando and now GS wants to pay ne $200. and some odd dollars as a good will settlement I am still waiting for that check to arrive in the mail. In my mind it should be called Good Sam roadside non-assistance. It didn't renew when it expired 12-26.

  • My only problem would have been staying in a hotel for 2 nights and not getting back home in a reasonable time. As it went I was half way home to Mich by Monday afternoon.
  • I am not often in the position to agree with GSRA. but in this case the OP would have been much smarter to let them take it to the GM dealer and let them tell GSE they cant repair it. Then they would have to tow it to another place at their cost.

I think strictly speaking GSE did their part.

This more than anything is just a failure of judgement.
  • Sounds to me like GoodSam did exactly what should have been done.
  • With the information provided, this does seem to be a fair resolution.

Ya I have to agree here too.

They offered you a GM dealership which they would have paid for the full tow. And how lucky that you were that close to a GM shop. Albeit you didn't take the offer and insisted on a further away shop. I think GS is being very generous offering you the 200.00.

Honestly just 'assuming' that shop could not work on your coach is what caused the problem not GS. Mechanics are not stupid they can work on any age vehicle. Just saying I certainly would not have opted for a 800+ tow when I could have had it towed for free by GS to a GM dealer.

Me thinks your 'antique' RV service man has you bamboozled that only he can work on your RV. :W:W

  • Hi bsinmich, I am deeply sorry to hear about this experience you had, would you mind send us a private message with your contact information and your membership number, I will follow up with you as soon as possible. Joe from the Good Sam Rapid Response Team.
  • Maybe it's like my health insurance???? If I call 9-1-1 for an ambulance, the ambulance is going to take me to the nearest hospital. My insurance will pay (provided I really had a problem).

BUT! if I tell the ambulance driver I do not want to go to "that" hospital, instead, take me to a different one... AND especially ... if the distance is farther ... the insurance won't cover the cost of the "ride" because I turned down "customary care". I can expect to foot the entire bill for the ride.

Somewhere, it's all in the fine print of your contract... somewhere???
