National General Rate Increase

I have been insured with National General Insurance, formerly GMAC Insurance for a few years now. Last summer in June My wife and I were headed from our home in Northeast Georgia to Lake City, Florida. We pull a 36 foot Jayco Jayflight G2 32RLS, We have been careful to take care of the travel trailer , it was bought new in 2010 a 2009 model. We still enjoy the new smell in our camper.
Near the Florida Georgia line on I-75 south bound we were passed by an 18 wheeler. We felt the wind surge a little stronger than usual as the truck approached us from the rear. When the truck was passing my drivers side door, I commented to my wife that he was very close and if the window had been down I could have reached out and touched the truck as it passed us. I did not give it much more thought until we arrived at our Campground near Lake City. I pulled into our site and as I went around the camper setting up, I got to the left rear corner and found the camper had been split from the top of the corner to the bottom and the ladder had been warped out of shape. I took some photos and continued my set up as it was after hours . The next business day I was at Camping World in Lake City, FL and showed the representative my photos and described the incident as well as possible. The Camping World representative looked at the photos and blew them up. He noticed some scrape marks along the left side metal at the point where the skin had been split. He said it appeared to definitely be an insurance covered claim and the repair would be rather expensive. I called National General from Camping World and explained everything to them. They then talked to the representative from Camping World and agreed to accept them as the adjuster. It took about two and one half months to get the travel trailer repaired. Parts had to be ordered and Jayco reportedly had difficulty obtaining the metal to replace the damaged metal. We continued to live in the Camper while the parts were on order. I bought a large tarpaulin and some Gorilla Tape and secured the opening to make it weather proof. When the parts finally arrived at Camping World I moved the Camper there and we moved into a hotel. It took another week or two to make all the repairs. The damage had caused damage to some of the structural wood under the metal and that had to be rebuilt. We now had had to stay in Florida for three months instead of the one month we had planned on. More Campground Cost and more meal cost. We then had to move into a hotel for a week or two while the actual repairs were completed.
Camping World did a great job on the repairs and the finished job looked great. Camping World collected my Insurance Deductible and facilitated the complete claim with National General. Other than the length of time to get the parts, no complaints at this point. I . 2017turned home about a week or two prior to Sept. 2017. My renewal premium the first of Sept. was over $300 more for 6 months, my next renewal is March 1, 2018 and has gone up another approximate $150.00 for six months. National General decided that my claim from getting his in the back of the trailer while driving on the Interstate was an "At Fault Collision". I have not had a ticket in over 15 years or more. I was hit in the rear and the only way I could have prevented this claim would be if I had never left home. I have never utilized the option to lower the premium by removing the collision when parked at home. I am not at fault in any way whatsoever. National General said I had an "At Fault Collision: I was hit from the rear, and they dropped my Defensive Driving Credit and raised my premium. I challenged it and was told they would review it and get back to me. I have never heard another word until I received my new premium notice.
I will not renew with National General again. I have found new Insurance that provides me even better coverage , they said the "At Fault Collision" is showing on my Claims record and my premium was increased close to a hundred dollars because National General put that on there. I am still paying over $300.00 less every six months with a bigger and highly rated Insurance Carrier. I found at least three or four other Insurance Companies that charge less than National General. I am very unhappy and discouraged that Good Sam Club has chosen to affiliate with an Insurance Company that will treat its and Good Sam Club's Customers in this manner.
After this experience if given the opportunity to grade National General, I would have to give them an F.
Look around before National General has the opportunity to screw you over also.

  • Good chance here to see the GS Team actually fix something.

    Good Luck
  • I'd of shopped and switched also but given the described events, any company is going to classify that as an "at fault".

You can petition the company that maintains the Industry wide database for a copy of your report and attempt to have the information removed, with "attempt" being emphasized. In the least you can provide your statement that will be attached to the report and sometimes can make a difference. That company is Lexis Nexis.

Years ago they (LexisNexis) listed an accident we had as at fault. We were rear ended while sitting at a red stoplight. We were able to get it revised only after many requests, eventually ending up in our attorneys lap to the tune of around a $500 bill and about a year. Our insurance at the time Allstate, despite not paying out as the claims were paid by the insurance of the guy who nailed us, were of no help but gladly raised our rates come renewal. It's a huge racket, and seldom sides with the customer.
  • You did the right thing by switching companies. We were with GMAC some 30 years ago and got screwed over. Switched to another company and never regretted it.
