New to the RV world.

Good evening every body, I'm new to the RV world, after saving little by little, I'm able to buy a 1984 RV class C motor home jamboree Chevy. The owner sales it for $3000.00 dollars. He says it has some cosmetic issues (he repaired the roof....)etc..: I wanted to have an RV for the longest time in my life, Camping, meeting others, beach, barbeque, with my kids and wife, go places....: I can afford that one now but....here we go!!! How much would the INSURANCE cost me in New Jersey? I now, I'm in new jersey but, I have a private gated parking, security cameras, I can install an alarm in it.... any advice on this please? Thank you very so much in advance.

  • Not sure how much the difference in insurance would be between NJ and NC, but you could probably get away with a couple hundred dollars a year for full coverage here. My 2013 Class C costs me in the $400 range a year. It was bought for $70,000.
  • I want to thank you all. I really thank you for opening my eyes. It was a dream, it still is, it will happen, later, maybe in another state, where I don't have to worry that much about insurance companies robbing me or bridges closed due to "traffic studies" when I have my family in a vehicle like that. Again, thank you all.
  • If you're from NJ, you know how much insurance can vary from company to company. As Dutchmen said, just go for liability to keep it cheap. Just remember, a 1984 vehicle is OLD! Forget the cosmetic stuff, you could be paying a fortune to repair the transmission, engine, etc. even if you normally do simple things like braked on your car, chances are you don't have the tools to do the work on a truck chassis. Then you have to consider how much more it costs to have a mechanic do the work since it's a truck. Good luck, just don't jump into it without thinking about it.
  • If you're paying cash for the Class C you can probably get away with liability and property damage insurance only, (no loan) because of the age of the camper it makes it virtually impossible for you to ever recoup any money in the event of damage on your part (or an act of nature or theft --- with full coverage). Just like with your family car, once it reaches a certain age, it's just not worth it to keep full coverage because the insurance will never pay enough to replace or sometimes even fix it. It will be totaled out and you'll be paid off what little value the camper has, which probably will not be very much and definitely not enough to fix the repairs and damage. If you carry just property damage and liability, (or the bare minimum your state requires), you can get insurance at much lower rates.

It's really best to inquire with your automobile insurance company first. They will work with you and give you the best deal for having multiple policies and vehicles with them. If they don't, they're a really crappy insurance company then!
