I pray we never have this type trouble again but I also know mechanical problems can occur any where, any time. I thought we were I covered to handle these problems. I am now much more aware of how to handle these mishaps!

Many departments don't allow their officers to change tires due to the risk of injury. They are to park the patrol units behind the broken down vehicle with the emergency lights on, and it's a good idea to get out of that unit once you've done this. They can and have gotten creamed from behind. My department leaves it up to us. They would rather we didn't change the tires but if we do they won't say anything. It's a situational thing. You just have to determine what would work out best. We get assistance calls on the highway quite often. We usually just protect and wait for the tow truck.
