[COLOR=] I am not in the towing business but that sounds high to me when truck drivers are driving for less than $1.00 per mile
And that truck has a load waiting to pick up and does not deadhead for more than 50% of the time as a tow truck does, plus the checkout the price of equipment. See how many "large car condos" you can buy for the cost of a single tow truck (designed to mainly pick up and tow) or how many tens of tractors that you can buy for the cost of a decent recovery rig. These trucks are nowhere cheap to buy and operate at more than 5X cost of a simple road tractor.
BTW, we were charging $1.40 a mile for the F350 trucks, so extrapolate that to what the big trucks were getting. Using a tow rig, we charged $2.10 per mile for a trip from Hickory NC to Barstow Ca and back, towing a Freightliner tractor both ways, and that was a deal for our customer, especially having to buy trip permits.
