Not worth it

We signed up for Good Sam Roadside Assistance in July. This was our first real RV trip in the Class C, an older unit and we were a little concerned about taking a 5,000 mile trip. Sure enough, getting off of the interstate at the first night's stop, it died. We'd had it gone over head to toe by our mechanic just a few weeks ago, so we knew it was probably not one of the "regular" things that would go wrong.

Called Good Sam's Roadside assistance and I must say that I was completely dissatisfied. First, we're told that our trailer isn't covered because we have a regular membership. So, when I asked him what I was supposed to do about that, just leave the trailer with the motorcycles on the side of the road or what, he didn't have an answer.

Then, we're told that it will take 1 1/2 hours to get a tow truck to us. We are blocking the off ramp, fortunately had a State Trooper behind us with lights on so that we don't get rear ended, but still, not feeling really safe. It is Friday afternoon at about 4:00 and traffic is booming.

Then, we are told that the repair facility can look at our RV on Wednesday. Remember, this is Friday. Assuming a two day repair (it is probably a fuel pump, just guessing) We would be stuck in this town for a week with our trailer sitting on the side of the road. They won't pay for or even discount a tow to a facility that can actually fix your vehicle in a timely manner, only the closest one.

No thanks. I called a tow truck which got to us in about 1/2 hour. He towed us to the KOA where we had a reservation. He gave us recommendations for repair shops on Monday and a card so that we can have him tow it tomorrow when the shops are open. The tow cost me about what my membership cost, I'll have to pay for a second tow tomorrow and move into a cabin at the KOA while waiting. Overall, I was really disappointed in the service that I received. I wonder if the KOA program is any better?

  • I probably would have bought the top level had it been offered, the way the ad on GS reads makes it sound like they'll tow anything. No so. I understand the towing to the nearest facility that can fix your RV, but not if that facility is going to take more than a day or two to look even look at it. I am just disappointed, thought that going through Good Sam Club would be the best option for RV needs. I've never been a fan of any automobile clubs either, but thought I'd give it one more try. I posted mainly so that others don't make the same mistake.
  • Get what you pay for.....

Not a GS/CW fan but you bought the entry level roadside assistance which didn't met your needs cause you didn't read the fine print.

    Not GS/CW's fault.

I personally don't have any extra roadside assist (GS/CW, Coachnet, AAA etc.)
I have towing via my ins. coverage. I call for tow, get a tow, pay for it and ins. reimburses me. Also covers lodging etc. as needed.
  • Thank you for the post bumpercarr. I apologize for the confusion and lack of service. Please send me a private message with your Good Sam and contact information and I will call you tomorrow. Thank you, Zach
  • I found out about that "trailer exclusion" the hard way too, only in my case it was with AAA. In that case, the driver still took the trailer along, but I had to pay for it. Wasn't that an option in your case just now with Good Sam?

    Also:

Was your only destination option the repair place, or would they have towed you to the KOA?

I'm asking all these questions because we recently switched to Good Sam, partly due to the (seemingly) broader choices allowed in those department.
