Possible Campground Closing

We were told by the Melville Ponds Campground office clerk that the Town of Portsmouth, R.I. is thinking about closing the campground. I looked it up on the Budget for 2015 and it states that they recommended that the campground be closed or put out for bid.
Melville Campground is a small campground with questionable 30 amp service but, it the only accessible campground on Aquidneck Island and I guess its one of the few on the east side of the state.
Maybe you know some people that might want to help the RV'ers in R.I. by taking over the campground and doing some improvements and advertising it.
Thanks
John

  • On a side note, the state of RI should have turned the site of the old Rocky Point amusement park into a campground! Best waterfront views in any campground in RI
  • Going to be awfully hard to find an operator who would want to sink in the amount of money it appears the park would need. Reviews indicate it needs the utilities redone, the sites leveled etc. Doubt the city would sell the property, so anyone taking it over is going to have to put in those improvements and not benefit from long term gains in property value. I don't know the area, but it sounds like if the property went up for sale it might have more value to a developer to change the usage than operate as a campground. Rates appear to be very high for what you get, and if the city is losing money at that rate (and they wouldn't be looking to close it if it was generating net income unless there are other issues which is a whole different ballgame), don't see how anyone could make money putting a bunch of money into it, especially if they are just leasing it.
  • We stayed there a couple of years ago while visiting Newport. It is very nicely located and we enjoyed our week stay. Would definitely go back again - hope they stay open!
  • I have never stayed there because I am not paying to camp 5 miles from home, but thank you for the heads up. We use to have a campground in Tiverton, but that closed many years ago.
