question on Pilot RV Plus Card

I'm a GS member since mid 2014 with a deluxe membership and I evidently missed the roll out of this Pilot RV Plus Card. I use the truck diesel lanes now with my visa card and swipe my deluxe membership card when asked. I don't have to go inside. I just completed a 1,500 mile trip and have no idea what discount was applied to diesel when I swiped my deluxe GS member card, if any.

I'm only interested in diesel fuel discounts and place zero value on anything other than diesel discounts.

Why would I want a Pilot RV Plus Card? Has my current deluxe member discount been rolled back to the basic GS membership tier now requiring me to get the Pilot RV Plus Card to get back to the deluxe membership discount tier?

What annual fees are required for the Pilot RV Plus Card?

I can't find anything from GS that explains why I should change.

Thanks

  • Main difference is the difference in the discount. For diesel, the GS card is .03 cents/gal, and with the Pilot/FJ card the discount is .07 cents/gal.

However, with my Discover card I get 5% back. So on 50 gallons at $3.00 per gall, with the Pilot/FJ card I save $3.50...but with my Discover card, I save $7.50.

With the Pilot/FJ card, I get half as much off just for the convenience of not having to go in (and usually have to leave my credit card), and then having to go back in once filled and retrieve my credit card.

Which do you think I use???:S

  • We have used the Pilot /Flying J card for a couple of years, the price is deducted at the pump, the bill comes in the first of the month and we pay it, it is easy to keep up with the bills ad I only need one card..It has saved us a lot over time, we do not get diesel, but gas for the trucks, lawnmower etc. .05 a gallon at the pump and the discount for propane adds up quickly.
  • Advantages of the Plus card as sdianel said and in addition:
The discount is applied to the cash price, not the credit price.
No shuffling cards while at the pumps and less exposure to your VISA card number.
Paying once a month is way easy online and you don't have to wait for a statement to do so.

There are other discounts on propane, dumping, and I usually score a free coffee now and again simply by sliding my card when I buy other stuff in the store. There are coupons and fliers via email as well. These are above and beyond the simple Good Sam discount.

    Edit: fixed typos

The discounts are the same for Deluxe Members for both cards.
The advantages to us for the RV Plus Charge Card are:
    1. the pump doesn't cut off after a certain limit so you don't have to reinsert the credit card more than once.
    2. the bill is only for fuel so we can easily monitor fuel costs.
    3. No annual fees, no interest because you must pay the entire amount due each month.
The disadvantage is that you must pay the entire amount each month, so if you have large fuel costs that month you can't for example pay half this month and half next like you could on a credit card. (we wouldn't do that anyhow).

    Thanks; good info,

#1 above hasn't happened, but I only carry 35 gallons. This would be a material consideration, but the others I can live with.

I don't see a reason for the Pilot card over the deluxe GS membership + visa card combination. It seems to be more paperwork for the same benefit.
