RV Extended Warranty

The Good Sam vehicle insurance has a provision to suspend liability and collision when the RV is laid up for the winter. This leads to a check being issued to the owner for the portion of the insurance not being used. Has any thought been given to the ability to do this with the Extended Warranty insurance? All of the RV systems will be off for the winter (at least in my RV's case) and you are insuring systems that can't break or need repair over that period of time. Purchasing the Extended Warranty with this provision would make the expense of the coverage easier to justify if it covers the portion of the year it's needed.

  • It's a gamble either way. Many of us prefer to play it safe.
  • Just go a call from my rv service guys. They told me that GSESP just approved all the items that had to be repaired on my coach. I have yet to find anything wrong with this plan. For what I am paying, I have saved thousands in repairs. No one wants things to go wrong, but that is a fact of life. Fortunately having a plan like this has saved a lot of aggrevation for me and my family. I wouldn't leave home without it.
  • Thanks for input and it's understandable now why the suspension can't be done.

This is a question that we get a lot. Actually, there are things that fail while an RV is in storage. Seals and gaskets dry out, engines that don't get exercized can develop problems. In fact, we see a large number of claims when RVs are first taken out of storage for the season and taken on their "shake-down" drive. If you suspended coverage during the storage period, these repairs would not be covered. For this reason we don't offer a suspension of coverage when a vehicle is in storage.

Makes sense to me. Plus an RV'er could extend their warranty out to nearly twice the amount of time for the same price. If I had the warranty suspended, but I actually used my RV during the suspension time, then I could have something break or stop working. If it wasn't detrimental and something I could live with for a while, then I could let it go. If it was something that was detrimental, then I could stop my suspension tomorrow and then the day after tomorrow make a claim saying I was doing a shakedown run and found it broken or it stopped. Whatever it may be. The warranty company would be losing out. It would be different than suspending insurance where physical damage is being occured (i.e. Liability).

  • I agree with you....but that is how they make their money. I was offered extended warranty on my fiver recently....."its only a $1 a day" was the sales pitch. Yeah sure.... but only use it 2 weeks or perhaps 3 in a year the rest of the time its standing idle. No thanks!
