Tow or not to tow....

Recently on a trip from Oklahoma to New York I got an intermittent engine warning light. Pulled into a campground and call Good Sam. Everyone on the Phone was fine. I requested a mobile roadside mechanic.
When I described the engine symptoms the person on the phone said they would check with a "tech". When she called back I was told that they had located three Roadside help services but one was too expensive and one of the two cheaper ones would call.
When I called back after a wait I was told that the "tech" had recommended a tow.
I said that I would prefer to have a Mobil mechanic.
It was made clear to me that if I turned down the tow and it turned out that I need a tow I would have to pay for the tow. Fair enough I said.
I asked which of the Road side service places was the most expensive they gave me the name and I called him. He showed up with full diagnostic computer gear and after some time diagnosed two problems, a sensor and a clogged fuel filter. Pretty much what the Cummins center 60 miles away would have done.
Next day I was on my way. At no time was I in danger or blocking traffic etc.
Good Sam did what they promised and no fault to them, but my question is that why would they not first send a Mobil tech and tell me I would have to pay his full charge if he was unable to solve the problem (round trip miles to my location) and then dispatch a tow?
I would bet that many fewer tow charges would result for Good Sam and fewer MH owners would have to go through the mess of being towed.
That would be better for both MH owner and Good Sam.

IMHO I'd have opted for the tow. Doing mechanical repairs on the side of an interstate is risky business and many shops won't even allow it anymore due to insurance. Its a real **** shoot if it even CAN be repaired roadside and then there are the parts needed to do the job. They sure can't carry every part known to man on board. So for me the odds are against it so I'd rather be towed off the road for safety reasons. Deal with the fixin later.

No Good Sam only pays for the miles to the MH location. That is in the contract. I was in a Campground. The roadside guy din not as you noted have "every part known to man" on board, but he had access to the very same computer info that the folks at the Cummins place 60 miles away had.
Good Sam did what they promised, as I said in my original post,
I had no problem with that.
I was in a campground. Had I been on the side of the road I would, of course taken the tow, hoped for the proper tow truck, spent at least one night in a motel and spent way more for the fix. Thanks

Glad you were lucky enough to have it fixed right there!

You said you asked for the most expensive tech service.
Did YOU pay for the call or did GS pick up the entire bill?

  • I believe all roadside assistance policies allow only one service per incident. You have to choose, sometimes difficult to do with an unknown issue.

I had an ignition key that would not release nor could I start the car. Called - did I wish a locksmith or a tow?? I choose the tow because IF the ignition system was toast, I still could not have moved. Tow truck driver came and mightily manhandled the key and got it out. Drove to the locksmith for some service on a balky key system all was good.

Hard to know the right choice but you had made yours and they should have followed up with your wishes. Glad it all worked out for you!

It is for this reason that many carry TWO separate emergency roadside service providers.
  • A reply to my question. Already better than most road service deals.

I love the asking for the "most expensive" one! You had a situation, needed to get it taken care of, and didn't want to fool around. Also like the constructive criticism, as opposed to venting (although, everyone needs a good venting now and then! lol).
  • Hello jgolden,
Thank you for your time, I will look into your question regarding the mobile tech. If you wish, please send me your contact information in a private message and I will follow up with the leadership team.

    Thank you,
    Ella
  • That may be true, but they do show a spark of concern from time to time.
  • They have a system.... It works for them .... They ain't gonna change it ...
