TT storage out of state of residence

My apologies for the edlay in answering back. For some reason my tablet didn't post the last two times I tried to reply.

I contacted Arizona DMV and was told that the TT should be registered and insured in the state I reside in. The other side of that is if we made it a permanent placement trailer and kept it in a park in Oklahoma, it would need to be insured and possibly registered in Oklahoma.

I've found a secure, closed storage facility that we will store it in when not in use. I like the fact that it stays out of the weather when stored. No sun damage or Oklahoma hail damage that way.

Until my retirement, when we are using it, we'll be in the Lake Murray and Lake Texoma area camp grounds. After retirement, I hope it gets some road miles on it. There are a lot of places I still want to see.

His messages state it will be stored in OK and they will travel there with the AZ tow vehicle hook up and go camping in and out of OK.

To the best of my knowledge, a TT needs to be registered with DMV ONLY if it is transported on the highways. You should be able to get a temporary (30-day?) permit from OK to transport the TT from the OK dealer to your OK storage place/campground.

Once the TT is parked at a long-term campground in OK, it should be insured as a second home and not part of a moving vehicle. You should be able to get a simple low cost homeowner's policy to cover it. I doubt that your AZ homeowners policy could be extended to cover the TT while its in OK. In an case, check with your AZ homeowner insurance agent to be sure.

My tow vehicle is registered and insured in Arizona. I don’t think AZ DMV will require an inspection as the tt is new. I’ve brought motorcycles and cars that I purchased in OK back to AZ and never had issue with registration. At any rate, this may be difficult and expensive to resolve if the insurance company requires that it be insured in Oklahoma.

We don’t currently know where it will be stored but we hope to find a secure, enclosed facility. The thought of a broken window in the open for months is unpleasant to dwell on.

Two issues. First registration. It will vary by locality, at least by state. Alabama requires vehicles purchased out of state to be physically inspected at a DMV site to verify the VIN before it can be registered. I'm pretty sure this applies to trailers as well as motor vehicles. Other states may or may not have similar or different provisions that would present a problem. As wildtoad noted Oklahoma might also have an issue with the registration. If it stays in OK full time, they probably want their taxes on it. This would probably be a difficult issue for them to identify though unless it sits with expired tags for long periods of time.

With regards to insurance, it will depend on your insurance carrier. I don't think the DMV in either location will care about your trailer insurance. In most situations, the liability portion, which is what the DMV cares about, is covered by the Tow Vehicle's policy. The trailer insurance usually covers damage to the trailer and its contents. Most carriers will ask where it will be stored and it could be an issue that its stored in a different state and only seen by you a couple of times a year. It could increase rates or prevent them from offering coverage, but it might not.

Where it is being stored could also be an issue. For instance, they may or may not see it more favorably if the unit is stored in a secure facility vs unsupervised lot. Will anyone notice / report damage if it occurs before it causes more damage? For instance if someone broke a window out would it sit exposed to the weather for 3-6 months before you return?

Call Oklahoma DMV and ask then IF your question is about location.

You also need to research taxes and registration. AZ registration is rather high as a starter.
