Unhappy with the demise of Highways Magazine

I am extremely unhappy with the upcoming demise of Highways Magazine.

Instead of asking the vast majority of its readers, Marcus decided to make changes based solely on "complainers" comments. No input from many other readers and no opportunity to do so. And why the change? Those who do not like what is published now are welcome to NOT read it. It is that simple!

So what will we get now? A four-times-a-year magazine, instead of the 10 times a year Highways!

Will Marcus be providing 3 times the GS content with the new magazine? (3 times the length of Action Line and Tech Topics for examples). Three times the current number of articles? Probably not. He says we will be getting the same Highways content but obvously a lot less of it and much less often.

This is a loss to everyone except the complainers. And many complainers will lose also. The complainers have always had the option of subscribing to one of the other publications that interests them more. No publication can please everyone and I am sure most like Highways just the way it is.

I have NO problem with the current massive advertising in Highways. That is what pays for the cost of producing it. Almost all magazines have advertising. Those that don't charge a lot more for them.

I want to read all about RVing, not just about one particular type of vehicle. There are many more types of RVs than two. Campers, vans, etc. are two more that the new publications will not address. The GSC is supposed to be about ALL RVers, not just a select few. I don't want either of the new publications.

I look forward to the almost monthly Highways. Too bad it is going the way of the dodo bird.

  • Hello All,

Another thread is already discussing this so I will be closing this thread as it is really just a repeat. However here is some information about this.

Highways is not going away. The editorial content (less the ads) will be included as an insert in Trailer Life or MotorHome magazines quarterly–or four times a year. It will appear as a separate section in the magazines.

Non-subscribers to Trailer Life or MotorHome magazines
You will receive your choice of Trailer Life or MotorHome magazines. The four free issues of Trailer Life or MotorHome magazines are included with your Good Sam Club membership. The first issue of four will be delivered in the month of February 2014. Although you will have an opportunity to subscribe to a full 12 issue subscription of the magazine–there is no additional billing or obligation when you select the four free issues.

Current subscribers to Trailer Life or MotorHome magazines
If you are an active Good Sam Club member and current subscriber to Trailer Life or MotorHome magazine in February 2014, you will receive 4 additional issues added to your subscription.

If you are NOT already a subscriber to the magazine please go to the website to let us know which magazine you prefer, Trailer Life or MotorHome. We want to be certain we send the magazine that best suits you. If you already subscribe to Trailer Life or MotorHome there’s no need to contact us, we will insert Highways into your upcoming magazine that will arrive in February.

Set your preference to Trailer Life or MotorHome at this link: http://www.goodsamclub.com/magazinepreference/Default.aspx
Or you can call 800-508-9755 toll free and speak to one of our representatives.

You can read the announcement from Marcus Lemonis, CEO of Camping World / Good Sam at following link: http://d7wompu62zbx1.cloudfront.net/Highways_Member_Letter.pdf

We are excited about the upcoming changes and serving you down the road.

Highways has been offered digitally for a very long time now.

Personally, I work on the computer and want to read printed copies of magazines and newspapers. It is my "break time" to get away from the computer. I refuse to read any news or other publications online.

Online is great for those who want it that way. I have no problem with that. The problem is losing Highways for the most part. This will apply to digital copies. Those will be lost too. No Highways coming out most every month, printed or digital.

  • Magazines that once cost 20-40 dollars per year now offering 1-2 year subscriptions at 5-12 dollars per year.

Even at greatly reduced rates, subscription circulation is decreasing.

The digital media world is advancing - the best source for up to the minute information.
  • More than likely it was an economic decision. Print magazines cost a lot of money to produce and distribute.
  • The writing was on the wall when it became more Camping World advertising than editorial content. Too bad, I will miss it as well.
