After a virus infected my computer during a visit to a Good Sam campground, I vowed to never again use the Internet access at anyplace like that ever again, because the owners either don't know how to secure their network, or they don't care.
When we got home I visited our local AT&T store and bought one of their data modems and subscribed to monthly Internet access for $50. Now I use that modem when at home, as well as one the road, and I don't have to worry about security as I did in the past.
I'm sure other providers have similar equipment and plans, so I'm not trying to sell what AT&T has, but it has worked for us for two years now, and it'll probably work for you, as well.
Any virus almost certainly came from either a bad website you visited or was attached to an E-mail you opened. Viruses are prevented by having good Anti virus software installed on your computer. Virus prevention is not a function of a wifi network and a secured network does not mean there is virus protection.
