In Nevada, diesel costs about the same as unleaded regular sometimes a little less. Most of the difference is indeed taxes. Diesel is a less refined fuel. It was cheaper than gas most places until the requirement to take out the sulphur increased the price. California has complicated recipes for fuel due to air quality problems.
