You do not need a code reader to get the codes.
Locate the OBD I connector, normally located on left side of the steering column at bottom of dash.
the connector has a straight side and a side with rounded corners. on the left end of the straight side, install a jumper, paper clip or short piece of wire between the bottom two pin locations.
Turn the ignition key to "ON". Watch the engine check light. It will begin to flash the codes. It will flash first number then pause, then flash second number. It will go through the system and give all codes. It will repeat the codes a three times.
For example it will flash once then pause then flash twice. That is code 12
