A bad alternator, or something causing a good alternator to go bad, can kill a battery. How? By not charging it. When the battery sits for a lengthy time in zero or discharge condition the battery self destructs over time.
See if you can determine if there is current coming from the battery with everything off. That's a start.
0ma is what you want. 50ma too much? Hard to say.
