Engine runs while being jumpered but dies after disconnecting. Correct?
Indicates that alternator for some reason doesn't provide enough power to keep engine running. Could be sick, discharged battery draws so much power that not enough is left to run engine. Try jumping with battery disconnected and remove jumper. Alternator will stay excited. And if engine dies, alternator is either not working or it's not connected to system (engine should run on alternator alone). Some have fusible links off of alternator. Check voltage at output stud of the alternator while engine is running. It should be in the 14 volt range.
