1992 ford bronco 4x4 good toad?

Need to know if I can flat tow. Manual transfer case and hubs and auto transmission. All factory original.

Thanks I have been looking for hours and can't seem to find a strait answer.

  • So I looked it up and it has the E code transmission which is the E40D. I read on a ford forum that the transfer case is lubed by the output shaft. But not sure how I could go about verifying. The 1995 owners manual says put the tranny in N then the transfer case in N And do not exceed 55 mph. This is for a tow truck so is it safe to assume I will be ok at 65-70 mph. Can't seem to locate a 1992 owners manual anywhere online.
  • Thanks I think since I need a new tow bar I will get this one with the braking assistance already incorporated.

    It depends.
Some transfer cases will not lubricate the output shaft bearings.
I don't remember which one(s) that is, but one of them was used in the late 1970s Jeep CJ7 vehicles, and others.
There IS, however, a fix for that. Vanes can be welded on a slider in the transfer case to splash lube the gears and bearings. I saw a description of the modification on a Jeep forum, but I did not bother to bookmark it.
I don't know if your '92 Bronco needs that mod or not.
    good luck.
  • I towed a 94 Ranger 4X4 auto and it required a drive shift disconnect to prevent burning out the rear trans bushing. The drive shaft continues to spin as it is towed and the rear bushing does not receive any lubrication.
  • Cool thanks. I have the 10000lbs hitch but need to check the tow bar. Currently towing a ranger so I might need to upgrade to a better one. But yes the plate is a must, prob go with the diodes for the lights like I did on the ranger. I currently have no braking system I will need to look into that.
  • The Bronco is a great vehicle to tow because it has a manual transfer case. Just put the transfer case into neutral, leave the tranny in park, turn the key so you steering wheel is unlocked, and you are good to go. You will need a tow plate, a tow bar, an auxiliary braking system, and lighting for brake, tail and turn signals. Some people use integrated lighting, but we prefer to use external lighting. Just stick the lights on the back end and plug them in. I am leaning towards the Blue Ox braking system as it is wireless. Also you will need a class III hitch as a minimum, we are going to be upgrading our class III to a class IV.

If we were not planning on buying a new 2016 F150 Supercrew I would be seriously pursuing purchasing a Bronco to pull behind our MH. But then I am a die hard Ford person.

    Good luch and safe travels.
