1993 Cobra alternator problems
New member, second post.
My dads rig, 1993 Phoenix by Cobra. P30 chassis, 454 engine. He's gone through 3 alternators in about 10K miles, that last 2 went out during a 7,500 mile, coast-coast trip. During the trip, the first one went out on the way east, the second one went out heading back west, just before he got home.
He had an aftermarket volt meter installed by a local mechanic a few years ago. Volt meter shows battery voltage when the alternator goes out and he can watch the voltage go down the longer he stays on the road. He's relied on the parallel switch to limp home a more than once. When alternator is working, it shows a tad over 14 volts.
Original alternator I believe, was 105 amps. He tried a remanufactured, heavy duty, 130 amp, that one went out on the way east. 105 amp reinstalled by roadside assistance service, that one failed just as he got back into his hometown.
Something else odd? A few times, when traveling through the mountains (he tows a Honda Fit), when the clutch fan kicks in, the volt meter drops to 12-11 volts. Once he hits level ground and the rig cools off a little the alternator would kick back in and voltage would show 14 volts. Cooling system never gets above 210 degrees.
Apologies for the long post, just trying to give details and a little background. Thanks in advance for any and all info!
