I find it odd that your igniter would go out that many times. It's nothing more than a spark plug. I would imagine that they are pretty cheap and fairly easy to replace. I'd just buy a couple and keep them on hand.
Concerning your AC, you can purchase the R-12 online. People have cans of it sitting around and will sell it for $10-$15 each. You can buy a few of them and repair the existing system and refill it will R-12. If you don't want to do it yourself, call a few places. Someone will have the old gauges and be able to do it. I think it'd be cheaper than switching to R-134a.
