Transmission failed on short trip yesterday. I was going up a hill in cruse control and transmission released and engine revved up and CEL came on. Coasted to a stop on the other side of hill and it would not move in any gear, like it is stuck in neutral. Linkage is in tact, but not going into gear?Any ideas on what may be wrong?

Yeah, transmission needs rebuilt. That is what happened to mine. 5 grand to remove,rebuild and re install. Lifetime warranty as long as we own it. We was 8 miles from campground on a 4th of July weekend.

$5000 sounds high to me. Rebuilts are $2K on Ebay and the guys on the Ford forums are talking about the same- $2-3k.It also depends if you do a remanny or new torque converter.I would do some checking around.You keeping it a long time or thinking of selling?

Multiple reasons for what happened. Stuck solenoid valve, failed oil pump, something let go in the torque convertor or maybe you're just low on oil. The difficult decision is to you pay out potentially several thousand or start over with a new to you coach.If everything else is in good working order with the house side of the coach I would consider full replacement but first I would have the engine checked out. Oil analysis, cylinder compressor and leak down testing just to ensure that you won't be bolting a new transmission to a engine that might be in need of a rebuild.

We had a Ford remanned tranny installed in our previous '95 F53 chassis at a truck garage in London, KY for $3K including labor. It took three days to get it shipped in, and one day to remove the old tranny and install the new one. The new tranny came with a 3 year/100,000 warranty from Ford. We broke down on Sunday and we're back on the road the following Friday. We continued to live in the motorhome the entire time, leaving it only for the time it was actually worked on.

How come nothing ever happens while you are home? 5 grand wasn't too bad of a price.

I spent 3 grand to replace to rebuild 08 f350. To be honest I spent 350$ on diagnosing problem and problem was the tranny was wore out. Should've just told shop rebuild it. I also found a shop that rebuilds for 2 grand..... Afterward. Just price shop and have towed there.

I had a JASPER "re-manufactured" unit installed. 4 grand. Disappointed with the warranty, but if their trannys are as good as their engines (had two replaced in different cars over the years) I should be OK.

Our 2000 Ford pickup was nearly $5,000 at the Dealership. I think it was partly due to location as they had to bring somebody in to do it. We ended up just trading.

How often are you changing the fluid? These new transmissions like CLEAN fluid, and MH duty is tough on them. When we had our gasser we were doing changes every 15,000-20,000 miles. Recommended was 30,000 back then.

Thanks for all of the replies. We chose to make a trade for a Travel Trailer. I think we got a pretty good deal on it, and it was what my DW wanted! The Rv dealer was thinking he could change the tranny for $3K, and so that is what the allowance was. I am happy that I do not have the responsibility of changing it. I know that it is a heavy piece of equipment and I really don't have the facilities for the change.
