1995 P30 backfiring thru intake when hot

Hi, wondering if anyone has had a similar problem like this:

1995 southwind 33 ft P30 7.4L TBI with Banks exhaust. 73k miles. Rv gets used alot. Every 3 weeks or so.

Starts loosing power and popping after it is warmed up. Takes about 10 minutes. Wont do it when cold, happens mostly at partial throttle when cruising about 60. Also happens after starting out from a stop. Doesn't seem do it under WOT .

Facts:

1. I removed the banks cold air snorkel, problem was much worse. Points to a lean condition.
2. Idle is perfect. No signs of vacuum leaks.
3. Replaced O2 sensor
4. Replaced MAP sensor
5. Replaced fuel filter.

So, it seems to me that this starts to happen when the computer switches over to "closed loop". That means its using the O2 sensor for feedback. But i replaced that. Does anyone know what else the computer uses to control fuel rate when in closed loop? Or, any other suggestions?

Thanks!
  • When was the last time that you checked your plug wires? They will start to "break down" when the engine heats up. It will cause the engine to Backfire also.

  • guy with similar problem posted solution

when I had a losing power issue it was the vacuum hoses collapsing and then the vacuum advance would not work something the 454 are apparently notorious for. changed tubing and problem ended.

both the solutions are low cost
  • I think your motor has a fuel pressure regulator. Have you checked it?
  • You can jumper pins A & B and read codes. The engine check light will flash the codes three times for each error. The check light doesn't have to be on to have codes.
Pins A & B are on the bottom of connector right side. Place jumper, turn on ignition and watch check light. 12 means it is checking, then codes.
  • It is the obd 1 system. Service engine light is not on. I need to get an obd 1 cable. Or take it to a shop for that. But, I would think if it was ignition, then it would have symptoms all the time, not just partial throttle when hot. But, i have noticed pre ignition pinging around the time it is loosing power and popping.
  • Have you checked for fuel supply? Fuel pressure? After loosing my fuel pump in the tank The mechanical pump worked but putting your foot into it or going up a hill it was loosing power and backfiring.
